This pretty, small to medium-sized conifer rarely grows taller than 15 m. It forms a narrowly conical, densely branched crown with short, narrow but blunt leaves that are dark glossy green above and pale to bluish below. The attractive female cones are purplish. It is one of the more popular species sold as a Christmas tree in the U.S. Abies fraseri is restricted to small, high elevation relict habitats in the southeastern Appalachian Mountains in southwestern Virginia, western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee between 1200 and 2000 m. It grows easily from seed. Cold stratification for 30 days after sowing will optimize results.
