Bamboos

The bamboo subfamily Bambusoideae of the grass family (Poaceae) contains about 1400 species that produce upright, branching stems from an underground rhizome. While the smaller members are herbaceous shrubs, the larger ones could be called woody grasses with tree-like proportions. Their culms are extremely durable and flexible and a popular construction material in the tropics, where most of the species are at home.
