Malvales

The Malvales are an order comprised of ten families of mostly woody plants, with fibrous, tough bark and leaves with palmate venation. The Malvaceae family, distributed in tropical and some temperate regions, includes species of great economic value, such as cocoa, hibiscus, okra, sea island cabbage, cotton and kapok. The lipstick plant Bixa orellana is commercially used as a natural colorant. Some notable ornamental trees and shrubs are found in the genera Adansonia, Brachychiton, Cistus and Hibiscus.
