Caryophyllales

The Caryophyllales are a very diverse order of flowering plants, ranging from trees to shrubs to succulents, lianas, mangroves and even carnivorous plants. Many species are well adapted to dry environments and saline conditions. Some of the most notable families are: Cactaceae or the cactus family, Caryophyllaceae or carnation family, Amaranthaceae or the amaranth family and Portulacaceae or the purslane family. Important edible species include quinoa, spinach, beets and buckwheat. Some of the ornamental species of major commercial relevance are the cacti and the carnations.
