Apiales

The Apiales order is comprised of seven families. Of particular importance are the Apiaceae, the carrot family, and the Araliaceae, the ginseng family. The Apiaceae include over 3700 species, amply distributed worldwide, particularly in the temperate areas of the northern hemisphere. Apiaceae are easily distinguished by their flowers, arranged in umbels or clusters emerging from a common center and forming a flat surface at the top. Many of them are popular herbaceous perennials. The Araliaceae, the other major family in the order Apiales, on the other hand, comprises only a few herbaceous perennials. Most of the members of this family are woody plants and some are important ornamentals, such as Aralia, Cussonia or Schefflera. The remaining families comprise mostly shrubs and trees, some of which are popular ornamentals such as Pittosporum.
