A truly magnificent, large Costus native to rainforests from Colombia through Ecuador to northern Peru that forms a cluster of shoots with leaves arranged in spiraling fashion. The long basal inflorescences can reach about 1 m tall and sport many broadly triangular, bright red bracts. In cultivation it is rather rare but will grow well in the tropics in full sun or shade. The inflorescence makes a superb cut flower.
