A small, dry deciduous tree to about 6 m (20 ft) tall with simple leaves and terminal flowers followed by edible fruits that are very sweet and have a strong but pleasant aroma. They are larger than cherimoyas in size. Young fruits are densely covered in silky hairs. Annona coriacea is widespread in savanna and thorn forests on sandy soils in drier, tropical Brazil and Paraguay. It is rare in cultivation, even in Brazil, but sometimes wild-gathered fruits are seen for sale in local markets. Germination takes 2 to 4 months and initial growth is somewhat slow, but trees start fruiting after only 4 years. It is best adapted to dry tropical climates.
