A rare and little known, sparsely branched shrub or small tree rarely more than 7 m tall with thick branches, large, deeply lobed, palmate leaves and pointed, ridged, orange to red fruits. It is native to montane forests of the Andes in Peru to 3000 m and is cultivated there for its edible, very tasty, aromatic and refreshing fruits that are eaten fresh, dried, or canned. A liqueur called Cacique is also made from the fruit. Carica weberhaueri tolerates some drought and cold and is best adapted to cultivation in warm temperate climates.
