A spreading, somewhat weedy shrub that grows just over 1 m tall with silvery foliage and attractive orange red flowers followed by inflated, initially light green pods that turn reddish when mature. Sutherlandia frutescens is native to arid regions in southern Africa. It is an important, traditional medicinal plant and also makes an attractive ornamental plant for warm temperate and dry tropical climates in USDA Zones 8 and above.
