This largest and most magnificent of all Bromeliads is native to the barren highlands of the Andes in Bolivia and Peru between 3200 and 4800 m. It forms a giant rosette of stiff, broad leaves atop a stout trunk to 3 m tall. The remarkable flower spike can reach about 10 m tall and appears after 80 or more years of vegetative growth in habitat. Fortunately, it adapts well to cultivation, where it takes only somewhere between 20 and 40 years to flowering. It does best in warm temperate climates without extremes of heat or cold in USDA Zones 9 and 10.
