Nitrogen Fixing

Many legumes (Fabaceae) grow root nodules that are inhabited by bacteria which can fix nitrogen directly from the air. Nitrogen is an essential nutrient required for plant growth and the bacteria enable the plants to grow on poor soils. Some of the nitrogen is not used up by the plant itself and benefits other plants that grow close by.
