This rare banana was described in 2001 from submontane rainforests in Papua, Indonesia on the island of New Guinea between 1000 and 1600 m (3300 and 5200 ft). It is a weakly clustering, mid-sized banana with robust, brownish pseudostems to 4 m (13 ft) tall, ascending leaves about 2.5 m (8 ft) long and an horizontally held inflorescence with a dense bunch of short, strongly angled, bright orange fruits. Musa johnsii is one of only six bananas currently known with schizocarpic fruits, in which the fruit skin naturally splits at maturity to reveal the fruit pulp. It is not currently known in cultivation but is unlikely to pose any particular challenges to growing in tropical and some warm temperate climates.
