A large, deciduous conifer to about 50 m tall, with a buttressed trunk, a spreading crown and light green, feathery foliage. Discovered in the 1940s and considered a living fossil, it is critically endangered in the wild in central China, where it grows in shady, moist sites in forest between 750 and 1500 m. Today it is very popular as an ornamental in China and elsewhere around the world and it has some value as a forestry tree. It adapts to a wide range of temperate climates from USDA Zone 5 to 9. Seeds germinate without pretreatment but have rather low germination.
