This attractive shrub or small tree, up to 6 m (19 ft.) tall, is originally from Mozambique and South Africa, where it grows in woodlands and scrublands, generally on sandy soils, at low elevations, below 200 m (650 ft.). It has bluish green, toothed leaves and delicate, creamy white flowers, followed by round fruits which burst open when ripe, revealing the bright orange seeds. Maytenus procumbens is a wonderful, hardy and drought tolerant ornamental for warm temperate areas.
