Easily one of the worlds most beautiful palms, this larger but stemless Licuala is native to the understory of swampy forests in Peninsular Malaysia. From a creeping, clustering trunk, it produces up to eight long-stalked leaves per stem that have a large, very broad, paddle-shaped central segment and two or four, rarely six, narrower lateral segments. The symmetry and slight arch in the leaf gives it an unrivaled elegance, perhaps only matched by the similar but even more elusive L. thoana. The pink fruit and pale brown seeds are fairly large for a Licuala and look like miniature Johannesteijsmannia seeds. While fairy common locally in its native habitat, in cultivation, Licuala bayana is virtually unknown as finding ripe seeds is a feat not many have accomplished. It will do well though in any humid, tropical climate, where it should be situated in a sheltered aspect. It also makes a striking potted plant.
