Gingers

The ginger and cardamom family or Zingiberaceae has roughly 1600 species in 50 genera. Most are attractive ornamentals with beautiful inflorescences that either are produced at ground level from the tuberous rhizome or at the end of the leafy shoots that can grow as tall as about 8 m (26 ft). All gingers are of tropical or warm temperate origin but a few are fairly cold tolerant.
