A small tree distributed over much of South America as far south as Uruguay and Argentina, generally at low elevations. It has tiny, white flowers followed by small, glossy purple fruit. The fruits are edible and sweet and can be eaten plain or made into a liqueur. In cultivation it adapts well to warm temperate and tropical climates.
