A strongly climbing species with thin, canelike, clustering stems and plumose, arching leaves with whorled leaflets and without a cirrus, so not as vicious as many rattans. It is widespread through Southeast Asia, from India and China to Indonesia, and grows in rainforests at moderate altitudes. In Thailand, this species is popularly planted for heart-of-palm production.
