A vigorous, clustering rattan native to montane rainforests from northeastern India and Bhutan to southern China and Southeast Asia, where it grows to an altitude of 1200 m (3900 ft.) It adapts well to tropical and some warm temperate areas and can sustain some cool and light frosts. Calamus flagellum forms slender canes that are used in the manufacture of handicrafts and furniture. It also produces edible palm hearts.
