A rare, natural hybrid between these two choice palm species, found in the highlands of northern Minas Gerais, Brazil, where only 2 mature plants are known. The true Butia capitata in this case is a rare, smallish palm native only to the highland of central Brazil in the states of Bahia, Goiás and Minas Gerais and not to be confused with B. odorata from southern Brazil, which in cultivation is usually mistakenly labeled B. capitata.
