This imposing, large, fast growing tree that can reach more than 50 m tall is native to tropical forests from northern South America to western Brazil and well known as the source of the tasty Brazil Nuts. These are produced in a woody, hard-shelled fruit about the size of a coconut. The seeds can be lengthy to germinate unless the hard shell is carefully cracked. Bertholletia excelsa needs a tropical climate to thrive and starts bearing after 10 to 20 years.
