A small but stunning palm native to rainforests to 1000 m (3300 ft.) from Central America to Ecuador with slender, solitary or clustering, canelike stems and broad, entire leaves that are softly hairy below and have only a few spines. Each palm only holds a few seeds on a very compact infructescence, so seeds are always scarce and in high demand. It makes an outstanding ornamental for the humid tropics.
