A lovely Attalea widespread from southeastern Colombia to Bolivia and Brazil. It has up to 30 huge leaves held erect in a shuttlecock-like crown giving it a full and plumose appearance. Its stout trunk is rarely taller than 4 m (13 ft.) and often covered with old leafbases. The bright yellow fruits are up to 11 cm (4.5 in.) long and the incredibly hard-shelled seeds are a popular diet of the rare hyacinth macaw. They are rich in oil and very tasty indeed. In the wild, Attalea phalerata grows in both savannah and forest. A palm for parks and large gardens, suitable for both tropical and subtropical regions.
