A beautiful cyclanth found on Escudo de Veraguas, a small island off the Caribbean coast of western Panama. Very palm-like in appearance and easily mistaken for a Cryosophila for instance, it forms a slender trunk that can stand alone when smaller or usually climbs up on large trees to a height of about 15 m. The large leaves are palmate and sport two wide lateral and central segments with several narrow segments in between these. The bright yellow, cone-like fruits emit a strong, very aromatic, ripe fruity flowery smell like sweet and sour fruits. This plant should make a magnificent ornamental for the tropical garden. It has been tentatively identified as Asplundia aurantiaca, which is also known from Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Ecuador, but it is not unlikely that this is an undescribed species.
