This shrub in the bean family (Fabaceae) originates in South Africa and is hugely popular for a tea that is made from its leaves and now marketed worldwide under the name Rooibos, Afrikaans for red bush, referring to the shrub's reddish branches. The leaves are narrow and needle like and yellow flowers appear in spring. Aspalathus linearis prefers a Mediterranean climate with cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers. It does best in sandy, acidic soils. Seeds must be scarified before planting and may benefit from a treatment with smoke extract like many South African shrubs and trees.
