A vigorous, clustering palm from New Guinea and the Northern Territory in Australia, where the starchy pith of the slender green trunks is processed into sago. Aren Sagu forms several spreading crowns of dark green, pinnate leaves with silvery undersides. Usually one trunk dominates a cluster and gets replaced after it is done flowering and fruiting. It is a fast grower particularly in the tropics but it will also adapt to more temperate climates and remain unharmed by short, light freezes. In landscaping, its merits are mainly as a backdrop for smaller specimen palms or as a large screen.
