This spectacular, large, African relative of the South American Cherimoya produces enormous, entire leaves to 40 cm long and large greenish to creamy yellow flowers that are followed by enormous greenish fruits that can weigh up to about 15 kg each. The fruits have yellow, edible flesh with a rich, sweet and aromatic taste and are among the largest known fruits. Even though fast growing, Anonidium mannii needs about 10 year to begin to produce fruits. It is at home in the understory of lowland rainforests and riverine forests in central Africa. In cultivation it is still exceedingly rare and there are only a few plants grown in tropical climates outside of central Africa.
