A medium-sized, vigorous ginger, widely distributed in tropical and warm temperate Asia, that produces clusters of leafy shoots to about 3 m (10 ft.) tall with stunning red bases. The lovely white flowers appear in dense clusters from compact inflorescences at ground level for several months. Apart from being a great ornamental for warm temperate and some tropical climates, the unopened flower heads can be used to in curries and the seed pods are a good substitute for black cardamom, even though not quite as aromatic.
