A medium-sized to large conifer from montane forests from Ethiopia to tropical eastern Africa where it is found mainly between 1000 and 2000 m (3300 and 6600 ft.) and rarely to 3000 m (9800 ft.). Its durable wood is of excellent quality and much sought after for construction, furniture and other uses. It is also an excellent ornamental for warm temperate and tropical climates in USDA Zones 9 to 11 and frequently seen as a hedge or screen or a specimen tree, often in formal settings.
