Native to eastern and southern Africa to 2100 m, this medium-sized, dry deciduous tree can reach to 25 m tall and grows in woodlands, swamps, riverine forests and flooded grasslands. Due to its presence in humid, mosquito-ridden habitats, locals associate it with malaria and its beautiful lemon-greenish bark is considered a remedy against this disease. Acacia xanthophloea presents a spreading crown, branches with pairs of long spines, bipinnate foliage and fragrant flowers, ranging in color from creamy-white to pink to purple. It makes an excellent ornamental for tropical climates. For good germination, seeds should be seeds should be immersed in boiling water and soaked overnight before sowing.
