Yucca brevifolia
Joshua Tree

A very distinctive tree Yucca and a typical species of the Mojave desert in Califonia, Arizona, Nevada and northwards to Utah. Older plants form a sturdy trunk that supports many crowns with typical spikey, bluish leaves. The Joshua tree is very cold hardy and takes severe freezes with ease but, being a true plant of the desert, it prefers drier climates and is difficult to keep alive in cool, wet conditions.

...very easy to germinate and need up to 1 month to sprout.
Plant under 1/8 to 1/4 inch of dirt, keep soil moist, ok if soil is wet sometimes, keep soil most until leaves form. Does not need high temps. to sprout, will sprout in room temp, or even cooler 65 deg. Seems to grow better with out acidic potting soil. Should sprout in 3- 10 days.

...very easy to germinate.
This was so so easy to germinate. I soaked seeds in warm water (in thermos flask) for 24 hours, then placed between damp paper towel which was then placed in a ziplock bag. For heat, I used a cardboard box suspended about 2 feet from a heat vent. 4 out of 6 seed germinated in 3 days.

An Encyclopedia of Cultivated Palms
by Robert Lee Riffle, Paul Craft

Hardcover - 528 pages
890 species!
929 colour photos!

Our Rating:
Suitable for: all

A definitive account of palms that may be grown in the garden and landscape. Because palms are often underutilized as a result of their unfamiliarity -- even to tropical gardeners -- Robert Lee Riffle and Paul Craft have exhaustively documented every genus in the palm family. Approximately 890 species are described in detail, including cold hardiness, water needs, height, and any special requirements. No gardener or landscaper who reads this book should ever again lose a palm solely because of lack of horticultural information.
