Cape Thorn, Buffalo Thorn
A small tree, rarely more than 10 m tall with rough, reddish bark and a spreading crown of smallish, glossy green leaves and insignificant, greenish flowers followed by brown to red, edible and slightly sweet but dryish fruits. Ziziphus mucronata is widespread in savannas and riverine habitats in sub-Saharan Africa and Arabia. It adapts well to cultivation in warm temperate and tropical climates and is often seen planted as a hedge.
