Malabar Almond, Sea Almond
A large, dry deciduous tree to 35 m tall with large, leathery, entire leaves in an upright crown with spreading branches. The leaves turn intensely red before falling. Terminalia catappa is widespread from Africa through tropical Asia and into the western Pacific. Its distribution has certainly been aided by humans on account of its edible, almond-like seed and perhaps less so for the fruit that is edible but acidic and tough-skinned. The Sea Almond is a choice ornamental tree for the tropics.
