Coffin Tree, Taiwan Cedar
A large, long-lived and somewhat rare conifer widely distributed from Burma to China in the provinces of (Guizhou, Hubei, Sichuan and Yunnan, Vietnam and to Taiwan between 1750 and 2900 m. In its natural habitat it is threatened by logging and habitat destruction. Taiwania can reach up to 80 m tall and its trunk can attain a diameter of 3 m. Its spreading branches hold drooping branchlets with needle-like foliage. Its light but durable wood is much in demand for making furniture, coffins, construction and other items. It also makes an attractive ornamental for the larger temperate garden.
