This deciduous vine is found in forests from the Himalayas to Southeast Asia. it forms a large, rounded caudex from which wiry shoots with attractive, round leaves wind themselves up onto other vegetation. The flowers are very small and insignificant and followed by little clusters of red fruits. It is a popular ornamental for warm temperate regions, especially with collectors of caudex plants. It is also used in traditional medicine for the treatment of fevers, liver ailments and as a sleeping aid and contains a great number of alkaloids that may have valuable medicinal properties. Some of them have shown antimalarial activity.
