Silene undulata (= S. capensis)
Xhosa Dream Herb
A low growing perennial, native to South Africa, with succulent roots and white tubular flowers. The downy leaves are smoked as a tobacco and the Xhosa of South Africa have made use of the plant to induce “dreaming.” In cultivation it is easy to grow, tolerant of drought conditions, and can be a nice addition to the rock garden or to borders in USDA Zones 8 and above. Seeds need light to germinate and must be sown on the surface of the soil.
