Malay Lac Tree
A very large, dry deciduous tree to 40 m tall with a spreading crown of pinnate leaves that are bright red when young. Schleichera oleosa is widely distributed in deciduous forests and savannas to 1000 m througout much of tropical Asia, where it is popular for a multitude of uses. These include its edible fruits and young shoots, a host of medicinal uses, a valuable oil extracted fom the seeds, dye, a very heavy, hard wood and the prime host tree for shellac production. It also makes an impressive ornamental for parks and large gardens.
