A deciduous, woody vine with simple leaves and small, white flowers that are followed by clusters of red, edible fruits said to taste sweet, sour, spicy bitter and salty at the same time. Schisandra chinensis is native from the Russian Far East to northen China and central Japan. It is cultivated especially in China as a medicinal plant. The fruits are also made into jams, sirup and various beverages.
