A large, deciduous conifer native to mixed forests in China from Hunan to Zhejiang, usually below 1000 m, with a thick trunk to 1.5 m or more in diameter and a spreading crown. The fresh green, long, narrow, needle like leaves are arranged in whorls and turn a beautiful golden yellow or orange before falling in autumn. The cones and seeds resemble Keteleeria most closely. The wood is used in construction and for furniture. It is also a striking ornamental for temperate climates in USDA Zones 4 to 9 and an important plant in traditional Chinese medicine.
