This incredible fruit looks like something dreamed up for a science fiction movie. A drupe aggregate like the Mulberry, the fruit forms its odd appearance because unfertilized flowers remain green and undeveloped and the fertilized ones protrude and ripen a brilliant orange. The fruit is tart and at the same time very sweet, with the aroma of strawberries and bananas! The tree itself is very beautiful, with long, handsome leaves and a spreading canopy. Prainea is an absolute gem and makes even seasoned botanists who encounter the fruit for the first time stand in awe. Little known, even in its native habitat, it does not have a common name. It does best in the hot, humid lowland tropics and does not seem to be fastidious of soils, although good drainage is appreciated. Seeds of this species are virtually impossible to obtain, and even long time tropical fruit collectors have never even heard of this spectacular plant.
