A large, stately conifer to 30 m tall with a massive trunk to 2 m or more in diameter that holds a spreading crown. The pale grayish green, leathery, needle-like leaves are about 2 cm (1 in.) long. The seed is held on the end of a berry-like, bright red cone. Common and widespread throughout New Zealand up to about 600 m (2000 ft.), it is a highly valued timber tree as well as a popular ornamental. It will grow well in all milder temperate climates in USDA hardiness zones 9 to 10. In Zone 8 it is marginal.
