Paired Flower Rattan Palm
A large, clustering climbing palm with slender, cane-like stems to 6 cm in diameter that can climb to more than 30 m high and are well armed with golden yellow spines. The long, arching leaves have narrow, somewhat drooping leaflets and a whip-like extension (cirrus) to help the plant climb. Plectocomiopsis geminiflora is native to rainforests in Indochina and western Malesia to 800 m. The rattan cane is of lower quality, used for coarse basketry and cordage, but the slightly bitter palm hearts are highly popular. It also makes an interesting ornamental for tropical climates if large trees are around for it to climb into.
