Platycladus orientalis (Compacta)
A medium to large, long-lived, evergreen conifer native to Korea, eastern Russia and China between 300 and 3300 m with a vertical or pyramidal crown at first that becomes increasingly rounded. The dense branchlets hold small, scale-like leaves. A nice specimen or hedge for the temperate garden in USDA Zones 6 to 9. Seeds should be cold stratified for 2 month or more after sowing. Compacta is a particularly dense, small growing form with a conical shape that is ideal for formal gardens.
