Phyllostachys edulis (= P. pubescens)
A giant bamboo from China with huge, bluish green culms and dense, deep green, beautifully arching foliage. It can grow to nearly 30 m (100 ft.) tall in a climate with hot, humid summers but will also grow well in cooler regions, where it generally stays much smaller, sometimes only 3 m (10 ft.) tall. It is very hardy and can take very severe freezes down to almost -20°C (-4°F) and is thus suitable for USDA plant hardiness zones 7 to 11. In China and Japan, this bamboo is one of the most popular for its edible new shoots.
