A spiny, scrambling, dry-deciduous shrub in the cactus family to about 3 m tall with oval, pale green leaves and attractive, white and yellow flowers followed by round, orange fruits. The leaves are consumed as a vegetable and the tasty fruits can be eaten fresh or made into jams and the like. Pereskia aculeata is native to the Caribbean, Central America and northern South America. It is easy and undemanding in cultivation and adapts well to warm temperate and tropical climates in USDA Zones 10 and above.
