Red Prickly Pear
A trunk forming cactus, reaching up to 4 m (12 ft.) in height, endemic to central Mexico, where it grows in desert scrub, at elevations between 1400 and 2600 m (4500 and 8500 ft.). Traditionally, the elliptical gray green pads of Opuntia lasiacantha were cleaned of spines and used as food (nopales). It has beautiful yellow to orange flowers followed by conical, greenish yellow fruits. The Red Prickly Pear will thrive in hot, dry climates and may tolerate mild freezes once established.
