A deciduous shrub to about 3 m tall with large, lobed leaves, spiny, sparsely branched stems and a terminal, whitish inflorescence followed by red fruits. Overall it resembles a Fatsia, to which it is also related. Oplopanax horridus is native to temperate rainforests from Alaska to the northwestern and northern USA. It makes an unusual ornamental for temperate climates and is an important medicinal plant.
