One book on the tropical fruit of Brunei, published in the 1990s, suggested that the Serait was headed for extinction or was probably even extinct. The so-called "nude ramboutan" is an extremely rare fruit, small in size and only about 2.5 to 3 cm in length. It is easily peeled and the aril is very juicy, sweet and inviting and quite unlike the common ramboutan in consistency. The heritage-red colored fruits have true commercial potential. Certainly not a species to miss!
