Kinabalu Mountain Banana
This diminutive mountain banana is only known to grow above elevations of 1000 m (3300 ft.) in the mountainous regions of northern Sabah, Borneo. The slender, dark mottled pseudostems are only 1 to 2 m (3 to 7 ft.) tall. The upright inflorescence produces glossy purplish-brown bracts followed by miniature bananas held in a very dense bunch not much bigger than a very large pineapple. The small ripe fruits, although seedy, are very sweet. A rare and localized species that should be most suitable for the cooler tropics and warm temperate areas with protection from frost but that has apparently not been introduced into cultivation until now.
