Manicaria saccifera
Troolie Palm

This stunning and very unusual palm from swampy areas in Central and N-South America grows to elevations of 1200m (4000ft). It produces a tall, slender trunk that is usually covered in old leaf bases. The leaves are simple or partially pinnate, stiff, erect, and huge, to 8m (26ft) long! In the Amazon the leaves have been used as sails for small boats and still are the preferred palm for thatching. No wonder, as it only takes a few leaves to cover an entire house! Very large but lightweight seeds which float because nature distributes them by water.

...easy to germinate and need up to 3 months to sprout.
Soaked for 3 days changing the water twice a day. Then planted in pure sand during the rainy season on the Mexican Pacific coast. 6 out of 10 seeds germinated within two months.
